Led by Aix-Marseille University (AMU), this four-week intensive training took place in July 2024 on Aegina Island, Greece, as part of the uBlueTec project.
Thirteen participants – including master’s students, PhD candidates, and professionals – a gained hands-on experience in advanced underwater archaeological methods.
The program focused on systematic excavation techniques, 3D documentation, and integrated land-and-sea topographic surveys at the ancient shipsheds of Aegina’s naval harbour.
Participants learned to apply photogrammetry for accurate recording of submerged structures, manage stratigraphic excavation processes, and handle artefacts under challenging underwater conditions.
By combining technological innovation with rigorous field practice, this pilot strengthened the skills needed to preserve and interpret underwater cultural heritage. Through uBlueTec, future experts are equipped to meet the demands of sustainable research and conservation in maritime archaeology.
