Led by Aix-Marseille University (AMU), this intensive field training was held from 24 to 28 June 2025 on Aegina Island, Greece, as part of the uBlueTec project. Over five days, three participants – two PhD students and one professional – gained hands-on experience in acoustic mapping using multibeam sonar technology.
The course covered the principles of multibeam sonar systems, survey design, and navigation planning, followed by practical deployment aboard a research vessel. Participants operated the equipment to map Aegina’s unique underwater cultural landscape, including ancient breakwaters and harbour structures, and learned how to process raw sonar data for creating 3D digital terrain models of the seafloor.
This pilot exemplifies uBlueTec’s commitment to advancing technical expertise in underwater documentation and preparing professionals for high-precision mapping in marine research and heritage conservation.
